Creatures- Vesuvious

Creatures- Vesuvius (Twelve Gauge Records/2012)

Ever since Creatures’ 7” “Salvation” I’ve been really stoked to hear what they were going to do next. I was lucky enough to hear some early demos and I knew that this album was going to be cool. Directly out of the gate the opening track “Broken Throne” hits you in the face with a sledgehammer. What I really like about this album is the guitar tone, it’s so perfect and also complimented with the guitars tuned down it makes you feel like you need to turn on your windshield wipers to remove the sludge dripping down in front of your view. It’s not all sludgy with songs like “Let Me Burn” which picks up the tempo right from the start and it also has a short but sweet guitar solo. I love how every song rolls perfectly into each other and I love the doomy track “Soulless Possessor” and the sample mid-way through the song. I love the ending track “Insubordinate” which might be my favorite on the album. I highly recommend this album but only if you are prepared to set aside roughly 25 minutes to bang your head till your neck hurts.

Animals as Leaders- Animals as Leaders (Self Titled)

Animals as Leaders- Animals as Leaders (2009)

Where to start. The master mind behind this band is named Tosin Abasi and is one of the best
modern guitarists in the world. It's not my opinion, he is the one of the best in the world right now. Tosin is a really well dressed black man, who at first glance looks nothing like the best metal guitarist in the world, but after your first listen your mind slowly seeps out of your ears and you succumb to the greatness that is Tosin Abasi. I was lucky enough to see him play live at Chain Reaction in July and it was the best show I've been to in a very long time. Listen to this song. Listen to the album and try to grasp the concept they played that album live front to back. 5/5, A++ whatever the grade, this band and album deserves nothing less then 100%.

Evan Brewer

This is my first post that isn't about an album its about a man named Evan Brewer. He plays bass, and he fucking shreds.

Exhibit A.

Now that your brain is seeping directly out of your ear-holes let me expand on Mr. Brewer. He played bass with Tosin Abasi in a band called Reflux. (If you don't know who Tosin Abasi, a. where have you been? b. read a fucking book and c. click here. Yes that is an 8 string guitar) If you want to read more about Evan's past you can google it, but as of 2010, he joined The Faceless, which only makes that band 817 times better then they already were. In 2011 Evan Brewer decides he has so much material that he is going to record a solo album, and the only music from the album will be produced by a bass. His album will be titled Alone, and it comes out on June 28th on Summerian Records. You can get more information here.

Decrepit Birth- Polarity

Decrepit Birth- Polarity(2010)

If you were wondering, yes this album is as cool as the artwork. Decrepit Birth is progressive/technical death metal with massive tempo changes and acoustic interludes to keep you hooked from start to finish. This album was on just about everybody's top 10 albums of 2010. I promise you this album is worth a listen, and not just because the music. Fun fact, the lead singer is homeless by choice, he lives in Santa Cruz on his marijuana farm. Pretty fuckin' cool if you ask me. MetalSucks interviewed him awhile back and you can read the entire interview here, and I highly suggest you do, he is one interesting dude.

Obscura- Cosmogenesis

Obscura- Cosmogenesis(2009)

Awesome album, just perfect technical death metal. When this album came out in 2009 it was on everybody's best album of the year lists and deservedly so. Every song is great in it's own way and to add something extra to the mix, their bassist uses a fret less bass. The way these guys write music is on another level and it really makes this album one of the truly great albums to come out in the past couple of years.

Carcass- Heartwork

Carcass- Heartwork(1994)

This a phenomenal album, I feel like they don't get thrown into the mix when discussing bands that originated melodic death metal, but this album to me is an excellent album of early melodic death metal. If you like or have heard of Arch Enemy, you're in luck. Michael Amott, the lead guitarist of Arch Enemy is/was the lead guitarist of Carcass, but I have to warn you, the riffs on this album will be stuck in your head for a very long time.

Gojira- From Mars to Sirius

Gojira- From Mars to Sirius(2005)

Gojira is a metal band from France that is unlike any other metal band on this blog. With progressive influences and riffs that make you feel like you need to turn your windshield wipers on to clear the sludge dripping into your view, this band literally has it all. If you are a fan of heavy music, you'll be a fan of Gojira.
